About Vinyl Fencing
Vinyl fence (aka PVC fence) has been around since the 1980’s and was originally used for low cost/durable horse fencing. As time went on vinyl fencing became more and more popular and different styles began to emerge. Due to more mild weather, vinyl fence grew its popularity in the east coast. As vinyl interest started to make its way west, additives such as titanium dioxide (TiO2), UV inhibitors, and impact modifiers were used to stable the brittleness and discoloration issues so to allow it to function in the warmer climates.
Typically, vinyl fence comes in two different colors, white and some sort of off beige/tan. We don’t see many other colors because the cost of adding the Ti02 and other modifiers. We tend to see a higher price in the beige for that simple reason, it takes more Ti02 to keep its color. Also, not all vinyl is created equal. There is such thing as a commercial grade and residential grade. Commercial grade is usually thicker and a different size than most residential grades.
When you are about to start your project, check and make sure you have pulled the proper permits and all utilities have been marked. Make sure the company you hire to do the work is reputable and can handle your particular project. If you are using vinyl for your porch railing, make sure the spacing between pickets pass code and are thick enough to stop someone from falling.
